The tricep pushdown is a cable exercise where you stand facing a high pulley and push a bar or rope down until your arms are straight. Your upper arms stay pinned to your sides, so the triceps do all the work.
The cable keeps steady tension through the whole movement, and the exercise is easy to learn, which makes it a staple of arm and push workouts.

How To Do A Tricep Pushdown
- Attach a bar or rope to a high pulley and grab it with your palms facing down (bar) or in (rope).
- Stand close to the cable with your feet hip-width apart and a slight forward lean.
- Pull your elbows to your sides with your forearms about parallel to the floor.
- Push the handle down until your arms are fully straight.
- Squeeze your triceps at the bottom for a second.
- Let the handle rise slowly until your forearms are just above parallel and repeat.
Tricep Pushdown Form Tips
- Keep your elbows pinned to your ribs throughout.
- With a rope, spread the ends apart at the bottom for an extra squeeze.
- Keep your shoulders down and back.
- Control the return rather than letting the stack pull your hands up.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
- Elbows moving forward and back. That turns the exercise into a press and pulls in the shoulders.
- Leaning over the bar. Using body weight to push the stack takes work from the triceps.
- Short reps. Straighten your arms fully at the bottom.
- Going too heavy. Pick a weight you can control for 10-15 reps.
Muscles Worked
All three heads of the triceps straighten the elbow. The forearms grip the handle, and the core keeps your torso still.
Tricep Pushdown Variations
- Rope Pushdown: Lets you spread the hands at the bottom.
- Single-Arm Pushdown: Works each arm separately.
- Overhead Tricep Extension: Stretches the long head of the triceps.
- Skull Crusher: A lying free-weight option.
- Band Pushdown: A home version with a resistance band.
How Many Sets And Reps Should You Do?
Start with 3 sets of 10-15 reps. Use a load you can move with clean form for every rep, and add weight or reps once the top of the range feels controlled for all sets.
Equipment For Tricep Pushdowns At Home
You need a high cable pulley. A cable attachment for a power rack works well, while an all-in-one trainer adds dual cables and plenty of handle options. For a closer look, read our Force USA G12 review.
