The leg extension is a seated machine exercise where you straighten your knees against a padded roller. It is the most direct way to isolate the quads, the large muscles on the front of the thighs.
Because there is no load on your back and no balance involved, it is easy to learn and useful for adding quad volume after squats or presses.

How To Do A Leg Extension
- Adjust the seat so your knees line up with the machine's pivot point.
- Set the roller pad just above your ankles.
- Sit back, hold the handles and keep your hips on the seat.
- Straighten your legs to lift the pad until your knees are almost locked.
- Squeeze your quads for a second at the top.
- Lower the pad slowly and repeat.
Leg Extension Form Tips
- Take time to set the seat. Lining up your knees with the pivot makes it more comfortable.
- Control the lowering for two to three seconds.
- Point your toes up toward the ceiling.
- Use higher reps with moderate weight.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
- Kicking the weight up. Swinging reduces quad work and stresses the knees.
- Lifting the hips. Keep your hips on the seat.
- Dropping the weight. Lower it under control.
- Wrong seat setup. Knees out of line with the pivot can feel uncomfortable.
Muscles Worked
All four quad muscles straighten the knee. Because it is an isolation exercise, very little else is involved.
Leg Extension Variations
- Single-Leg Leg Extension: Works one leg at a time.
- Banded Leg Extension: A home option with a band.
- Leg Press: A compound machine exercise for the legs.
- Hack Squat: A quad-focused machine squat.
- Goblet Squat: A free-weight quad builder.
How Many Sets And Reps Should You Do?
Start with 3 sets of 10-15 reps. Use a load you can move with clean form for every rep, and add weight or reps once the top of the range feels controlled for all sets.
Equipment For Leg Extensions At Home
A standalone leg extension machine is the most direct option. Some all-in-one trainers offer a leg extension and curl attachment that bolts onto the same frame.
